Three Ways to
Experience the Forest

The Giants Trails network is designed around three distinct riding experiences — pick the one that matches your group, your time, and your ambition.

Short MTB loops
01
Short Forest Loops
5–10 km · Half day · All ages

Beginner-friendly circuits winding through open tingle woodlands. Interpretive signs explain the ancient ecology around you — towering red tingle trees, coastal understorey, and the sounds of endemic birds overhead. Picnic spots and Nornalup Inlet views reward the easy effort.

Medium loops near Valley of the Giants
02
Valley of the Giants Loops
10–20 km · Half–Full day · Families & intermediates

Flowing trails pedalling among 400-year-old red tingle groves, with boardwalk integrations and views up into canopies 60 metres above. Combine with the iconic Tree Top Walk for a full day that moves between ground level and the treetops — two completely different perspectives of the same ancient forest.

Adventure cycle loop
03
The Adventure Loop
70 km · Full day or multi-day · Experienced riders

The full circuit — Giants Trails blending into the Munda Biddi Trail ("path through the forest" in Noongar language). Monastery Landing, the Frankland River edges, Sappers Bridge, and a gentle final climb to the Valley of the Giants. Orchids, endemic birds, karri and tingle all the way. Multi-day camping options available.

A Living
Natural World

The Walpole-Nornalup region contains one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Australia — and riding through it puts you inside it, not just beside it. Red tingle trees found nowhere else on earth tower up to 60 metres. The forest floor blooms with endemic orchids in spring. Kookaburras, red-tailed black cockatoos, and western rosellas are trail companions.

Red Tingle Trees
Up to 400 years old, 60m tall, and found only in this corner of WA. Base hollows large enough to walk through.
Endemic Orchids
September to November sees the forest floor erupt in wildflowers, including rare spider and donkey orchids found only in the Southern Forests region.
Native Wildlife
Red-tailed black cockatoos, western rosellas, quendas (southern brown bandicoots), and the occasional echidna are common trail encounters.
Nornalup Inlet
Where the Frankland and Deep Rivers meet the Southern Ocean — a glassy, sheltered inlet with black swans, pelicans, and stunning reflections visible from trail viewpoints.

Riding
Through the Seasons

The trails ride year-round, but each season offers a completely different experience of the same ancient landscape.

Spring
September — November

The undisputed best time to ride. Wildflowers blanket the forest floor, orchids bloom along every trail, temperatures are mild, and the forest is at its most vibrant green. Days are long and weather is reliably good.

Wildflowers Orchids Mild temps Long days
Summer
December — February

Warm to hot days make early morning rides essential. The forest canopy provides good shade on trail and the coastal proximity keeps temperatures moderate. Popular with holiday visitors — book shuttles ahead.

Shaded trails Early starts Book ahead
Autumn
March — May

Excellent riding conditions with cooling temperatures and fewer visitors. Tingle leaf litter creates a copper-toned forest floor and the low-angled light in autumn mornings makes for spectacular forest riding.

Quiet trails Perfect temps Golden light
Winter
June — August

Cooler, wetter weather but the forest is lush and deeply atmospheric. Some trails may have muddy sections after heavy rain — check DBCA conditions before riding. Crowds are at their lowest; the forest feels truly wild.

About the Giants Trails
Walpole-Nornalup National Park · DBCA

Developed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions in collaboration with Common Ground Trails and Magic Dirt Trail Works, the Giants Trails connect Walpole, Nornalup, and the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk. Purpose-built for low-impact, leisurely riding through ancient tingle forests — graded green (easy) throughout the core network, with options up to moderate on the adventure loop.

Broader Connections
Munda Biddi Trail · Bibbulmun Track · Denmark coastal tracks

The Giants Trails connect to the Munda Biddi Trail (Map 8: Walpole to Denmark, ~154 km point-to-point) for riders seeking longer touring. The Bibbulmun Track huts provide overnight options for multi-day adventures. For more technical terrain, Denmark's coastal tracks lie just 40 minutes east and provide a natural extension to a Walpole riding trip.
